The Om Home: Our Modern + Minimal Master Bedroom

We’re makin’ progress, my friends! Today, I’m walking you through our modern n’ minimal master bedroom that truly feels like a sweet, sweet retreat. I love being in our dreamy little oasis, because it feels peaceful, and it makes me all the more excited to go to sleep each night - I mean, what adult ISN’T excited to sleep these days? Haha.

Before you peep our bedroom reveal, make sure you’re caught up and have read our kitchen and living room reveal first! We go through how we budgeted to furnish our home, along with our design process with Decorist (@decoristofficial). Mindful, Minimal, and Plant-iful

We still hold the same values of creating a sleep-positive environment that’s free of clutter, distractions, and technology (no laptops or TVs + we avoid phone usage in bed). We also don’t have lamps on our nightstands, because we try to limit the amount of artificial light we use, especially at night. [Related: 7 Tips to Naturally Improve Sleep Hygiene]

And we are a big fans of Parachute’s linen bed sheets. Linen sheets are one of those things that you don’t realize is a big deal until you have it… now, I don’t think I could ever turn back. Linen is a very sustainable fabric that keeps you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It’s also bacteria-resistant and way more durable than cotton. So, these sheets will last ya.

Aside from that, I obviously have a lot of plants, but it’s not just for aesthetics. Plants can help purify the air, boost your mood, and it’s an easy way to spice up a space without adding clutter. [Related: A Quick Guide to Houseplants for Beginners]

In the past, I would buy home decor piece by piece with no true game plan or reference for how it would all come together. By taking the time to design the details of the room BEFORE purchasing anything, we’ve saved ourselves money and unnecessary stress. Everything is intentional! While it seems like more upfront work to gather measurements and design the mockups, I promise you it’s worth it. Whether you work with a rad designer like Erika or DIY-it, planning ahead is the key to creating a space you’ll love and thrive in.

Now, I must brag about Andrew’s Homemade Hexagon Shelves…

While researching new ‘over-the-bed’ inspiration, we came across the idea of hexagon shelves to display our plants. AHHH! We looked into purchasing handmade shelves on Etsy, but you know me… if I see something I love, I want to do it right away. Most of the orders on Etsy take about 3 weeks to fulfill, and girrrrl, I was too impatient. So, we decided this would be the perfect house project to tackle ourselves, and it would feel all that more special since we did it together.

We picked out some FSC-certified pine wood at Home Depot, bought a hefty compound miter saw, cut each piece, sanded it, connected each side with wood glue + nails, and used sawtooth hangers on the back to mount it. We are so in love with these shelves, and most importantly, I'm so impressed by my handyman Andrew. He can literally create anything he puts his mind to and it always comes out lookin' like a freakin' masterpiece on his first attempt. How the heck.

After DIYing it, I have so much respect for the artists on Etsy who make and sell these shelves. I promise you their pricing is more than fair after seeing how much time and energy goes into it. But, if you are wanting a fun weekend project and have all the tools, then I say give it a go. We're excited to build more things now that we've got that miter saw.

For the rest of our bedroom design, we kept it simple! We splurged on this beautiful West Elm dresser and decorated the top with an oversized brass mirror, existing plants (self-watering planters are from My City Plants), and my Saje Oil Diffuser.

Happiness is a lil balcony

I wanted to share a little about the balcony that’s connected to our master bedroom, because it’s one of my favorite spots in (er, outside) the entire house. This is where you’ll catch me hangin’ pretty much every morning. Just a happy plant mama, enjoying the sunshine, wearing all the jumpsuits with no bra and bare feet. It’s become my go-to spot for sipping my matcha and journaling before the sun rises. Andrew and I sit and have morning chats about life, and Luna loves to lounge out there with us too. It’s just so relaxing, and I think it’s important to have blissful little spaces that bring you joy. Our balcony is definitely one of mine!
