minimalism : have less, do more, BE more

"Happiness can only be found if you free yourself from all other distractions."

- Saul Bellow

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. What do we really need to remain comfortable and happy in our lives?  What are the essentials? I am speaking solely of materialistic items - clothing, shoes, accessories, skin care, hair care, gadgets, etc. We accumulate so much in our lives, but do you ever think all of this excess could be obstructing our thoughts and overall quality of life?

It feels good to buy something new... but what about buying something quality that lasts? It is my dream to live in a world where being "on trend" doesn't matter so much, and the media didn't pressure us to keep up with the unrealistically fast-fashion world we live in now. I do not want to be a part of a world where children are working every day and night in sweat shops, creating cheap garments that we won't even think about 2 months from now. So, it begs the question.... do we really need all of this?

To be honest, I feel incredibly happy and stylish when I wear my favorite pair of denim jeans and a white tee shirt. I am a lover of accessorizing, so I layer on the necklaces and stack up the bracelets. Most of my jewelry is hand-made by independent artists on Etsy or is made by a woman in Uganda (thanks, Jossy!). I buy jewelry that MEANS something to me and supports a cause I believe in. This is one of the best ways I've been able to fight all of this waste. Another great way to stand up against these billion dollar fast-fashion corps (you know exactly which ones I am referring to) is to be thrifty! Second-hand stores are stocked with incredible finds these days, and you often find garments with the tags still attached.

If we focus on supporting the smaller companies that actually give a damn, we can get quality goods that will last longer, so we can buy less and waste less. That means more money for food, travel, entertainment! I like the sound of that.

"BUY LESS, CHOOSE WELL" - Vivienne Westwood

With the uprising of corporations like Alibaba, it is truly frightening. We are living as if we have another planet to retreat to once we destroy this one with all of the chemical dyes and fabric waste piling up in landfills. We have a choice and we have a voice, let's not be afraid to use it AND act upon it.

Here's a list of some of my favorite companies (mainly accessories) that I KNOW you'll love too!:
