5 Tips for Maintaining Your Wellness Routine While Traveling
Since I’ve been traveling quite a bit recently, I figured it’s a good time to bring up wellness routines while on the road. It’s a question I get asked a lot. Regardless of whether the travel is for work or for pleasure, it takes a toll on your routine. It can offset self-compassion, flexibility, and openness, which we need for our wellbeing. More than anything, I’ve learned to live in the moment, making sure not to limit myself, but also staying mindful of how certain decisions might impact me.
Here are a few travel tricks of the trade that help me maintain self-care and stay on my game even outside my normal routine and environment:
Book an Airbnb instead of a hotel.
When I’m not traveling for work and I have a say in where I stay, I opt for an Airbnb over a hotel. I enjoy living like a local wherever I go, so I gravitate towards a more comfortable home-away-from-home stay. Especially if I’m in town for longer than 3 or 4 days, I like having access to a kitchen, so I can cook and eat at ‘home’ for 1-2 meals. I find eating my own food for at least the morning part of my routine really helps my stomach feel better adjusted. Which leads me to my next point...
Take care of your gut.
Having some consistency, whether it’s drinking my matcha every AM or making sure to eat a nutrient-dense meal that my body recognizes and enjoys, not only helps your digestive system, but it saves you money too!
I also take digestive enzymes when I’m eating at places that might have cross-contamination of my food allergies. It helps to break down the food so it doesn't trigger allergic reactions in my body (I get flu-like symptoms or sometimes hives when I consume my allergies like wheat/corn).
Carry a reusable water bottle.
Water is so simple but does your body so much good. Stay hydrated and continuously flush out toxins (add ACV for a little extra oomph to the immune system). It’s easy to forget to drink the same amount of water you do at home when you are moving around all day, so by keeping a water bottle in your purse it can serve as a friendly reminder. Here’s my favorite travel water bottle.
Move your body.
If you’re traveling to a new city, chances are you’re already doing a lot of walking! Feelin’ like you need a little more action? I personally enjoy exploring new studios in every city I visit, whether it’s yoga, cycling, or something unique. It’s a fun way to feel like a local, but also get my body moving. But, don’t feel like you have to spend cash on a fitness class. You can always stretch, walk, or jog around the area you’re staying. Maybe search for a park and spend an hour there before you start your day. Totally up to you.
Psssst, my good friend Kait Hurley and the founder of the Move + Meditate Method JUST launched her new app (get it here) which allows you to get your workout and meditation on in as little as 20 minutes (I even make an appearance in her Feel the Love flow!!). Since the classes require no equipment other than a yoga mat and option 2lb weights, I’ll be taking KAIT with me on the road this week as I head to NYC. New subscribers get a FREE 14 day trial, which includes access to complete library of workouts, meditations, and guided programs.
I’m SO proud of Kait, and I know you’ll love her just as much as I do.
Don’t be TOO rigid with your routine.
Whether you’re traveling for work or you’re on vacation, find that flexibility and allow yourself to live in the moment. Enjoy the food you’re eating and don’t worry about formally working out if you’re busy exploring. Who cares? A huge part of wellness is also enjoying life, laughing, sometimes staying out too late and having a glass of wine with some old friends. It’s not all or nothing.
Ultimately, make the most of your trip and enjoy your time away! There’s nothing better than discovering and exploring a new city. And it’s not impossible to keep up healthy mental and physical habits while on the road.
